The first ever steel mill was established in 1952 by the H Akberali Group of Industries as the “Bangladesh Steal Re-rolling Mills (BSRM)” located at Nasirabad, Chittagong and plant was formed re-enforcing bars and structural sections. The steel industry in Bangladesh produces mainly two classes of products such as flat steel (mainly CI sheet and CR coil) and long steel (MS rod/TMT bar). Although there are currently over 400 active firms in the industry, the top 20 companies service more than half of the demand. Among them, BSRM, PHP family, Abul Khair, KDS Group, GPH Ispat, Karnafully Steel, RSRM, KSRM, Anwar Steel, AK steel, Rahim steel, S.Alam ,Apollo Ispat  are worth mentioning.

 

As with the global market, there is also a supply surplus in the local steel industry. The current demand is around 4 million tons, while the total capacity is around 8 million tones. The government projects account for nearly 40% of total steel consumption. At the moment, per capita steel rebar consumption in Bangladesh is only 25 kg this is expected to grow to 50 kg by 2022."

Manufacturers have attributed the soaring dollar prices to price hike of rods, saying they have to collect the raw materials, scrap iron and clinkers, at high prices. It is differ for different steel company such as KSRM, BSRM, AKS, Rahim, Bandor, baizid, GPH-Ispat, Salam, etc. 

Many companies calculate the price for different dia such as 10 MM to 25 MM same but 8 MM, 28 MM, 32 MM and 40 MM increase by TK 500 to TK 1,000. Steel selection Guide:

There are there steel grade available in Bangladesh. There grades are-

1.      500 W (People known as 72.5 Grade- means 72,500 psi);

2.      400 W (People known as 60 Grade-means 60,000 psi);

3.      300 (People known as 40 Grade-means 40,000 psi);

 

1. 500W/72.5 Grade steel bars:

Ø  500W steel bars will form a sturdy, durable backbone to your construction. They have a number of special characteristics that elevate them above other, regular steel bars on the market.

Ø  The yield strength of 500W Steel is minimum 500Mpa (72500 psi). This high strength is gained by the Q&T process of our newly installed state-of-the-art rolling mill, which makes 500 W STEEL a very safe option to be used in civil construction even in earthquake zones. 500 W STEEL is much stronger than conventional bars and ensures over 20% stronger structures with the same quantity of steel.

Ø  500 W STEEL has no embittered tendency during welding or cold deformation of welding joints due to its unique chemical composition.

Ø  500 W STEEL is manufactured by thermo mechanical treatment process with no tensional residual stresses on the bar. This results in corrosion resistance characteristics than conventional bars.

Ø  More strength with higher elongation makes the concrete structure sound and safe. Applying Q&T process on the low carbon steel assures elongation above 14% for STEEL 500W. This unique feature of elongation displays better blending properties without cracking which makes the construction work easy and safe.

Ø  Q&T process improves the homogeneity and repeatability of the mechanical properties of the rebar and keeps the quality of 500 W STEEL consistent.

Ø  500 W STEEL rebar is produced by state-of-the-art rolling mills, designed to keep the bar at a straight 180˚. You will not need to go through the hassle of straightening the bars at the construction site.

 

2. 400 W/60 Grade steel bar:

Ø  Grade 60 rebar offers a minimum yield strength of 60,000 pounds per square inch (psi), or 420 Mpa scales on the metric grading scale. It also features a continuous line system, with one line running along the length of the bar which is offset a minimum of five spaces from the center. Grade 60 rebar particularly well-suited for medium- to heavy-duty concrete reinforcement applications.

Ø  Grade 60 is a boiler pressure vessel quality steel that has good weld-ability and excellent notch toughness and perfect for moderate and lower temperature services. This material is used extensively by the boiler and pressure vessel fabricators which best use for manufacturing support to the petrochemical, oil and gas industries.

 

3. 300 40 Grade Steel bar:

Ø  For construction engineering, steel reinforcing rebar is widely used in tandem with concrete components. Since steel and concrete have similar heat expansion coefficients. Thus rebar can be used to increase the inherent tactile strength of concrete, adding long-term stability to the structure.

Ø  Grade 40 designation offer minimum yield strength of 40,000 pounds per square inch (psi) and conforms to ASTM A-615 performance standards. Its metric counterpart is grade 280 rebar, with equivalent minimum yield strength of 280 Mpa scales. This makes grade 40 rebar an excellent choice for light- to medium-duty concrete reinforcing construction.
